Ren Zhengfei discusses AI development and future at ICPC

Mr. Ren: Because we are an enterprise, the attribute of an enterprise is to create commercial value, and the attribute of a school is to explore the future of mankind. The school is doing "0-1" research and innovation. It doesn‘t matter if "0-1" fails. It has cultivated a large number of talents. Talents will create a new future if they climb higher step by step based on the theories of their forefathers. Enterprise is about turning the theories created in school into industrial reality.



I recently met a great entrepreneur, and he said that our country‘s water turbine engines are advanced in the world, including turbine and impact engines, but the original inventions are all from Western countries such as Austria, France, and the United States. Including China‘s trains, ships, and textile machinery, original inventions are basically Western; calculus and geometry were all proposed by the West. The university actually studies and explores "0-1".



China will also catch up and offer original ones. Let me give you an example. The best weather model in the world was actually proposed by a 22-year-old in our company. This weather model was made using weather data from European weather satellites. He used the entire universe as a wind tunnel and the Earth as a model. I heard many people say that this weather model can be used to predict food production, power generation, and the accurate route of typhoons... Therefore, China may also have original ones. Of course the entire HVDC system is original. The architectural design including StarLight transmission is a world-class invention.



There is also a 22-year-old Russian girl in our company who invented a new remainder algorithm, which may change the implementation structure of the multiplier and adder of our AI chip and improve the chip‘s capabilities, but it is not used now. Why, the chip we once invented has not been put into production for six or seven years, and we cannot change the architecture again.



Therefore, the purpose of education is education, and the purpose of enterprises is commerce. If they get mixed up, we will go backwards.



4. Question: I am from Hungary, and von Neumann is our Hungarian. We also participate in various competitions in the international community. After hearing your thoughts, I have an observation. In the era of AI, the success of AI is the most critical to us. The most critical point is to find the most talented students, whether they are high school students or college students. Our country has many institutional innovations that have contributed to today‘s prosperity. Our country was a closed world before the opening-up and reform. During the opening-up and reform, we introduced many outstanding achievements of civilization. Civilizations did not conflict, but promoted many creations. China‘s economy achieved a blowout development. Hundreds of years ago, ships, trains, clocks... many of them were invented by Europe, even small countries. After these things entered China, they promoted our development.



We communicate with friends from various countries around the world, as well as with you young people, to convey our ideological connections. We just make friends and get to know each other. We are eager to communicate with the world, learn about civilizations and cultures around the world, and create what is needed everywhere.
